Pine-scented and romantic Poros Island with its traditional Greek island architecture, myriad of narrow streets and maze of alleyways, is a natural and popular "traditional Greek island" film location background, of only 33 square kilometres and 3750 permanent, hospitable residents.
Poros Island is located 31 nautical miles south of the Athenian "Never on Sunday" internationally film famous port of Piraeus and only 200 metres opposite Galatas village, on the unspoilt Argosaronic north-eastern Poloponnesian Greek mainland.
Mostly rugged, the Argosaronic coast is blessed with magnificent & exquisite sea & mountain scenery and also an enchanting, monastic tranquillity.
According to Greek mythology, Poros was originally the property of Apollon, God of the Sun, Music and Song, but was reluctantly exchanged for Delos and Delphi in an arrangement with Poseidon.
Poseidon, the powerful, tempestuous and persistent God of the Sea, had been captivated by Poros's natural beauty and pursued relentlessly its imminent acquisition. (We did not negotiate this transaction; honestly, Mr Wonderful Taxman).
This arrangement was favourably received by the neglected Mrs Apollon, who recognised the perfect opportunity to distant her amorous husband from the wandering and impressionable young mermaids which were daily gathering on the island's sandy shores, to be charmed and seduced by Mr Apollon's lyre and Greek accent,... according to a local historian, Mr Stamatellos.
Today, alas, the old ruins of Poseidon's Temple (520BC), await the archaeology lovers in serene silence. (There are other old relics also awaiting patiently, but please remember ladies, some of them may still be married!).
Galatas is a peaceful village located in a picturesque, naturally sheltered bay with a population of 3000 friendly and very lucky people who are surrounded by magnificent, natural scenery.
When not dazed by this divine and heavenly gift, or by the visiting female tourists, most of the locals are also preoccupied in the hotel & catering industry and agriculture, cultivating the fertile and arable fields with vegetables, citrus fruit, vines and olives, which when harvested in late October, are then pressed into olive oil of excellent quality, by the local press.
A continuous village improvements programme is being implemented by the civic administration authority, under the guidance and supervision of its young, but sympathetic and progressive mayor with impeccable manners and Hollywood film-star appearance, Mr Sambanis.
Poros and Galatas are blessed with all four magical, blue-sky seasons; hot summers with a cool breeze and mild winters with most welcome moderate rainfall; a most precious Greek commodity, providing essential water for the benefit of the local inhabitants and agriculture.
Both Poros and Galatas can easily be reached by sea from Piraeus with reliable, scheduled car-ferries & hydrofoils (1 hour journey) with timetables which are not affected by adverse atmospheric conditions; unlike middle-of-nowhere islands whose sole, life-line sea transport can be disrupted.
Poros and Galatas are also linked by road to Piraeus, Athens and the EV International Airport (24hours-a-day, 365days-a-year, global service) in only two hours; or even less by some Greek kamikaze drivers!.
